Sara Duterte as DepEd Secretary – Alapan 1 Elementary School
In fast few weeks, Presumptive Vice President Sara Duterte has vowed to look after the welfare of teachers and non-teachers of the Department of Education (DepEd) when he takes office in July this year. Duterte has expressed concern about the situation of some teachers who are “deeply in debt” due to the presence of moneylenders within the organization.
Mayor Sara said that a non-teacher went from Davao City go to her office and asked for help regarding loan. She said she was saddened to learn that the teacher was earning only PHP1,000 a month as most of her salary went into his borrowed money.
“That is the sad reality for our teachers. I saw it when I was the mayor of Davao City. They were enticed by companies who offered them loans. They were paying big interest rates,” Duterte said.
Duterte expressed concern that teachers who were attacked by their own problems could disrupt the quality of teaching in schools.
“I only have six years to work with you and to improve your welfare and the quality of education in our country. “I am soliciting your support that we may come up with something concrete to improve the welfare of the teaching and non-teaching staff of the DepEd, and see a better country with learners that are disciplined and patriotic,” Duterte said.
It is one of DepEd’s priority aims to improve the welfare of teachers and employees. Given the fact the the Department of Education had the most number of employed public servants, there needs must be address sufficiently. Presumptive Vice President Sara Duterte also mentioned her commitment to produce competent learners during his office as DepEd secretary. This will gave way to the Department of Education’s Mission “We dream of Filipinos who passionately love their country and whose values and competencies enable them to realize their full potential and contribute meaningfully to building the nation.”
