According to World Health Organization, Monkeypox is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe. With the eradication of smallpox in 1980 and subsequent cessation of smallpox vaccination, monkeypox has emerged as the most important orthopoxvirus for public health.

However, the Department of Health (Philippines) said it was closely monitoring the latest reports and developments in response to the infectious disease monkeypox virus infection.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said “So, antayin natin ang susunod na ulat patungkol dito. Pero ako, akin ng sinabihan ang Bureau of Quarantine— yong quarantine medical officers natin na bantayan ito (So, let’s wait for the other reports on this. But I already told the Bureau of Quarantine — our quarantine medical officers to monitor this)”

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) websitem posted recently, monkey “was first discovered in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

What are the signs and symptoms for Monkeypox? Monkeypox’s symptoms include fever, headache, swelling of the lymph nodes, back pain, muscle aches, and severe asthma or weakness, the WHO said.

World Health Organization also added “Monkeypox is usually a self-limited disease with the symptoms lasting from 2 to 4 weeks. Severe cases can occur. In recent times, the case fatality ratio has been around 3–6%.”
