The Department of Education is now focusing on learning gaps resulted from decades of flaws in the curriculum. On Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2022, the country was ranked 79th in Literacy and Numeracy ranking. This means in every 10 learners, 6 had poor literacy and numeracy skills expected to the learning age. In such, the department will now begin its Catch Up Friday Program on January 12, 2024. This program aims to address the problem of poor reading and computational skills of K-12 learners. We want to help you with the appropriate reading materials for DepEd Catch Up Friday Program. You can download and do necessary revision to these reading materials. We explicitly expressed that our team doesn’t own these reading materials which belong to public domain.

In the figure above from PISA 2022, about 80% of Filipino students were classified as having Proficiency Level below Level 2. This means that majority of students cannot identify the main idea in a piece of text of moderate length and may have difficulty in making comparisons based on single features of text and in making connections between text and outside knowledge. They are also not expected to represent literal meaning of single or multiple texts in the absence of explicit content or organizational clues.
In Catch Up Friday program, all public schools are directed to focus on 3Rs (Reading, Writing and Arithmetic) or the foundational skills every Friday. “It means that we will do nothing else but to teach the learners how to read and those who are good in reading, teach them critical thinking and analysis. For those who are good in critical thinking and analysis, let them write a book, essay, and everything that the children need to learn, let’s do it on) catch-up Friday,” Duterte said in her speech.
