Grade 2 learners are expected to wrap up the school year in Quarter 4. The MATATAG Curriculum focuses on a deeper understanding and practical application of skills. This quarter also strengthens values, creativity, and independence across learning areas. Makabansa helps pupils understand their roles in the community and practice responsible citizenship. GMRC reinforces respect, cooperation, and decision-making in everyday situations. By the end of Quarter 4, Grade 2 learners confidently apply what they know, connect lessons to real life, and prepare for the challenges of the next grade level under the MATATAG vision of strong foundations and lifelong learning.
The Daily Lesson Log (DLL) is a vital tool for implementing an effective learning process. This log details the flow of classroom activities and outlines the competencies that need to be achieved. It also consists of new sections, such as the Pre-Lesson, Lesson Proper, and Post-Lesson. These new sections simplify the old version of the DLL, which many teachers previously found difficult to understand. The DLL emphasizes classroom activities as the primary method of delivering the teaching-learning process. Additionally, this document serves as a testament to a teacher’s creativity and professional skills.
Overview of the Grade 2 Matatag Curriculum
The Department of Education (DepEd) will fully implement the Grade 2 Matatag Curriculum in School Year 2025–2026 as part of its effort to establish more targeted learning standards in basic education. It will shift the focus from broader basic learning skills to foundational skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic.
This curriculum builds upon the groundwork laid in Grade 1 by introducing Filipino and English as separate subjects, whereas Grade 1 combined them under a single subject called Language. This aims to further develop learners’ proficiency in both languages. The curriculum also reduces the number of subjects from seven to five, removing MAPEH and Mother Tongue as separate subjects.

Therefore, Grade 2 now focuses more on minimizing the number of competencies, as evidenced by the removal of two subjects. The curriculum removed Mother Tongue as a separate subject, but it still plays a pivotal role in the learning process. Educators still recommend using it as the medium of instruction in the early grade levels. Teachers actively use the learners’ mother tongue to explain lessons, especially when students struggle with English or Filipino.
On the other hand, MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) has also been removed from Grade 2. Some of its competencies have been integrated into the five remaining subjects. Particularly, it emerged in GMRC (Good Manners and Right Conduct) and Makabansa.
Outline of Grade 2 Competencies in Quarter 4 DLL
The Grade 2 Matatag Curriculum focuses on strengthening the foundational learning skills introduced in the previous level. Nevertheless, the competencies for the five (5) Grade 2 subjects are outlined in our prepared Matatag Curriculum Guide.
| Learning Area | Content Standards | Performance Standards |
|---|---|---|
| English | Learners continue developing decoding of high-frequency and content words and understand simple sentences about familiar contexts. | Learners use word knowledge and simple sentences to express ideas, read grade-level texts with appropriate fluency, and communicate experiences clearly. |
| Filipino | Learners build comprehension and communication skills by understanding vocabulary, sentence structure, and simple everyday texts. | Learners use Filipino to express ideas, respond to texts, and communicate appropriately in familiar contexts through speaking and writing. |
| Mathematics | Learners understand basic mathematical ideas such as numbers, simple operations, patterns, and introductory fractions. | Learners solve routine tasks using numbers and simple representations, explain patterns, and apply measurement concepts in familiar situations. |
| Makabansa | Learners explore self-identity, family roles, and community awareness through cultural and social topics. | Learners demonstrate understanding of their roles and responsibilities by describing community practices and showing respect for cultural traditions. |
| GMRC (Good Manners & Right Conduct) | Learners focus on values such as discipline, respect, and responsibility in daily life. | Learners apply positive social behavior and ethical decision-making at school and at home in age-appropriate situations. |
