In a groundbreaking initiative dubbed “Tapatan sa Alapan: Addressing the Competencies and Learning Gaps in Literacy and Numeracy Through Teacher Collaboration,” Kindergarten and Grade 1 teachers at Alapan 1 Elementary School engaged in an honest dialogue yesterday, Sept. 17, to bridge the learning gaps and overlaps between the two foundational levels.
The “Tapatan sa Alapan: Addressing the Competencies and Learning Gaps in Literacy and Numeracy Through Teacher Collaboration,” which focused on determining the strengths and weaknesses of current K&1 learners revealed a clear picture of the transition challenges affecting the teaching and learning process. K&1 teachers mapped out the related competencies and both agreed that their collaborative focus should be on how to effectively teach letter sounds and letter recognition.
The joint effort highlighted the importance of open communication and connection between teachers from present and previous grade levels. The dialogue culminated in a shared commitment, with Kindergarten teachers pledging to further emphasize pre-writing activities, focusing on developing fine motor skills and proper pencil grip, while Grade 1 teachers, in turn, committed to incorporating strategies that build on existing knowledge and providing differentiated support for learners struggling with these skills. The “Tapatan sa Alapan” initiative demonstrates the school’s data-driven and needs-based approach to fostering a collaborative and learner-centered learning environment.
