Adapting to new approaches in teaching and learning, the Department of Education (DepEd) has set a roadmap for the review and updating its MATATAG Curriculum Guide for Grade 1. This curriculum is all about helping our first graders become confident and capable explorers of the world around them. It focuses on building a strong foundation in six key areas:
- Reading and Writing Like a Champ: Mastering those letter sounds, recognizing sight words, and putting those skills together to actually read and write stories! Imagine the look on your child’s face when they proudly write their own bedtime story!
- Math Whiz in the Making: Counting, adding, subtracting – it all becomes a fun adventure in Grade 1. They’ll also learn about shapes, patterns, and even basic measurements.
- Science Detectives: Get ready for some “wows” and “cools” as your child becomes a science detective! The MATATAG curriculum introduces them to the wonders of plants, animals, and even the weather. Think simple experiments, observations, and tons of curiosity!
- Speaking Up and Listening Close: From clear communication to understanding different points of view, Grade 1 hones those social and communication skills. They’ll learn to express themselves confidently, listen attentively, and collaborate with their classmates.
- Expressing Themselves Creatively: Art, music, movement – the MATATAG curriculum lets kids explore their creativity in all sorts of ways. They’ll be singing songs, drawing pictures, and maybe even putting on a little show for the class!
- Growing Up Good: Learning good values like honesty, respect, and responsibility is a crucial part of Grade 1. The curriculum integrates these values into everyday activities, helping our little ones become kind and responsible individuals.

Kasi kahit hindi mo na yan turuan pag naging interesado yan, magbabasa yan at magdi-discover ng mundo on their own,” added Usec. San Antonio. In addition, DepEd will also review the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) implemented this school year and assess if these are sufficient for learners to acquire knowledge and skills.
