The Department of Education (DepEd) released the School Calendar and Activities for the School Year 2024-2025. The calendar highlights that there will be 197 school days in total, however, subject to changes in unforeseen circumstances. The number of school days should not exceed 220, following Republic Act No. 11480, while the Department of Education’s historical ideal minimum is 180 days. The calendar for School Year 2025-2026 is considerably acceptable in all legal standards.
The uniqueness of this calendar in recent years is that it mandated our educational system to return to the June–March school cycle. This is important because of the country’s weather cycle. In the previous school year (2024–2025), many schools frequently experienced class disruptions due to heavy rain or extreme heat.
It is also important to point out that the DepEd Order No. 12 s. 2025 allows the continued use of different learning modalities to combat suspensions. Furthermore, the Department of Education has authorized school heads, Superintendents (SDS), or any person in a position of authority to automatically suspend classes under certain circumstances. For example, according to the DepEd Guidelines on the Suspension of Classes, classes from preschool to college are automatically suspended when a Typhoon Signal No. 3 is issued by PAGASA.
Official Start for SY 2025–2026
The school opening for all public schools is scheduled for June 16, 2025. Private schools, however, have the discretion to set their start dates. They must submit a request to the Schools Division Office and a copy of their school calendar in their area.
Furthermore, Brigada Eskwela will run nationwide from June 9 to 13, alongside the enrollment period in public schools. You only need to submit your Birth Certificate, Report Card, and BEEF for enrollment. However, learners in Grades 2 to 6 and 8 to 10 who are continuing at the same school only need to submit a confirmation slip.

New Guidelines or Policies
All public schools must implement full face-to-face classes as the primary learning modality. However, they are allowed to offer online or modular learning in certain situations where face-to-face classes are not viable.
Additionally, the Department of Education is now institutionalizing the policy of a one-month uninterrupted vacation period for teachers. This allows them to rest without having to think about any work-related concerns. Under this policy, school heads or officials are directed to refrain from contacting teachers under their supervision regarding school-related matters during this period.
On the other hand, some public and private schools will pilot a revised Senior High School (SHS) curriculum in School Year 2025–2026. The new structure consolidates existing strands. The several tracks offered before are now streamlined into two: Academic and Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL). This revised curriculum emphasizes elective subjects, allowing students to choose courses that align with their interests and career goals.
The School Calendar for SY 2025-2026 is more detailed and specific in the dates compared to previous years. DepEd refrained from using TBA or “To Be Announced” in their calendar, which is a good move to avoid inconsistencies among schools. Also, it adds another enclosure to enumerate all the expected celebrations and observances along with the legal bases.
Most importantly, it is Multi-year Implementation guidelines, which means that there will be fewer changes in future calendars compared to this. This ensures that future school years will ideally follow a June-to-March schedule.
