DepEd K-10 Matatag Curriculum Guide

Adapting to new approaches in teaching and learning, the Department of Education (DepEd) has set a roadmap for the review and updating of curriculum for Kinder to Grade 1 in its Matatag Curriculum Guide.

“We are also responding to the challenges of curriculum, education per se. This is a persisting challenge even before I came in and we continue the review of our curriculum, especially in this time with the pressure to rely on technology and the pressure to respond to what everyone describes as the new normal in the light of COVID-19,” Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones said.

Undersecretary Diosdado San Antonio mentioned that the Department has already laid down a roadmap for the 2022 version of the K to 10 curriculum. “Ang initial agreements talaga namin para sa Kinder hanggang Grade 3, mas paiigtingin natin yung pagbabasa, pagcompute at social emotional skills. Gusto natin mas simple pero marunong na marunong,” he said.

“Ang importante marunong siyang magbasa at yung mga importanteng kaalaman at kasanayan. Kasi kahit hindi mo na yan turuan pag naging interesado yan, magbabasa yan at magdi-discover ng mundo on their own,” added Usec. San Antonio.

In addition, DepEd will also review the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) implemented this school year and assess if these are sufficient for learners to acquire knowledge and skills.

DepEd K-10 Curriculum Draft

It includes the following subject areas: Kindergarten, Araling Panlipunan (AP), English, Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan / Technology and Livelihood Education (EPP-TLE), Filipino, Music, Arts, Physical Education and Health (MAPEH), Mathematics, Science, and Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC).

Upon closer review, the draft introduces several topics that many may consider controversial, especially in Grade 10. For example, DepEd plans to include lessons about the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and the ruling of the Hague arbitral tribunal under Araling Panlipunan or Social Studies in the proposed Grade 10 curriculum guide.
