National Reading Program is one of the main focuses in DepEd Catch-up Fridays Program starting January 12, 2024. According to the statement of DepEd and Vice President Sara Duterte, the program aims to address the shortcomings noticed in the result of PISA 2022. Anchored on the MATATAG: Bansang Makabata, Batang Makabansa agenda, DepEd adopts the NLRP to:
- strengthen the learning recovery and continuity program of the Department,
- improve numeracy and literacy, and
- accelerate the achievement of the education targets.
The DepEd National Reading Program (NRP) is a program that promotes literacy development from Key Stages 1 to 3 anchored on the foundations of reading skills development in the early grades. It is a two-tiered program lodged as (i) a core reading program under the Literacy, Language, and Text curriculum and (ii) a supplemental reading program promoting enhancement, intervention, and remediation in support of the realization of the standards in the core curriculum. Hence, this is a program that harmonizes all reading programs implemented in the schools. It is an EOSY program and is sustained in the regular school year.
SUGGESTED STRATEGIES FOR READING
The National Reading Program caters to the different reading needs of learners through its two-pronged approach: (1) Reading Intervention and (2) Reading Enhancement.
Implementation of NRP in Catch-up Fridays
According to DepEd Memorandum 001 s. 2024, All Fridays of January 2024 shall be dedicated to the “Drop Everything and Read” (DEAR) activity and orientation for field officials. In Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), teachers must provide learners with an opportunity to read a book of their choice. This should be done independently and silently for a relatively short period, i.e., a maximum of 30 minutes with no interruptions or quizzes on what has been read.
“All Fridays throughout the school year shall be designated as Catch-up Fridays, with a focus on operationalizing the National Reading Program (NRP) during the first half of t1le day’s schedule and on fostering Values, Health, and Peace Education for the second half. Additionally, the Homeroom Guidance Program (HGP) shall also be included in the Catch-up Fridays,” Item No. 6 DepEd Memorandum 1 s. 2024.
