Adapting to new approaches in teaching and learning, the Department of Education (DepEd) has set a roadmap for the review and updating of its MATATAG Curriculum Guide for Grade 1. This curriculum is all about helping our first graders become confident and capable explorers of the world around them. It focuses on building a strong foundation in six key areas:
- Reading and Literacy: Mastering those letter sounds, recognizing sight words, and putting those skills together to actually read and write stories! Imagine the look on your child’s face when they proudly write their own bedtime story!
- Mathematics: It all becomes a fun adventure in Grade 1. They’ll also learn about shapes, patterns, and even basic measurements.
- Language: The learners demonstrate developmentally-appropriate language for interacting with others and expressing ideas and feelings about familiar topics; they engage with and enjoy listening to a range of texts; and they recognize familiar images, icons, and symbols in their environment.

In addition, DepEd will review the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELCs) implemented this school year and assess whether they are sufficient for learners to acquire knowledge and skills.

Budget of Work for Grade 1 based on the Three-Term School Calendar
Grade 1 is the start of a child’s school journey. The Budget of Work (BoW) helps guide this first step. It plans lessons in a simple and caring way. Teachers use it to build routine and confidence each day. With the BoW, learning feels safe, organized, and joyful from the very beginning.
