The Department of Education is now in full gear with the implementation of the Matatag Curriculum, as Grade 2 is also planned to be rolled out. This curriculum is a revised version of the K to 10 Program, aiming to reduce the number of competencies. With the opening of classes for School Year 2026–2027 approaching, you should be prepared for these new changes. Thus, teachers must now compile and revise their Matatag Daily Lesson Logs (DLL) for Grade 2, Term 2.

The Daily Lesson Log (DLL) is a vital tool for implementing an effective learning process. This log details the flow of classroom activities and outlines the competencies that need to be achieved. It also consists of new sections, such as the Intentions, Learning Experiences, Assessment, and Way Forward (ILAW). These new sections simplify the old version of the DLL, which many teachers previously found difficult to understand.
Overview of the Grade 2 Matatag Curriculum
The Department of Education (DepEd) will fully implement the Grade 2 Matatag Curriculum in School Year 2026–2027 as part of its effort to establish more targeted learning standards in basic education. It will shift the focus from broader basic learning skills to foundational skills such as reading, writing, and arithmetic.
This curriculum builds upon the groundwork laid in Grade 1 by introducing Filipino and English as separate subjects, whereas Grade 1 combined them under a single subject called Language. This aims to further develop learners’ proficiency in both languages. The curriculum also reduces the number of subjects from seven to five, removing MAPEH and Mother Tongue as separate subjects.
Therefore, Grade 2 now focuses more on minimizing the number of competencies, as evidenced by the removal of two subjects. The curriculum removed Mother Tongue as a separate subject, but it still plays a pivotal role in the learning process. Educators still recommend using it as the medium of instruction in the early grade levels. Teachers actively use the learners’ mother tongue to explain lessons, especially when students struggle with English or Filipino.
On the other hand, MAPEH (Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health) has also been removed from Grade 2. Some of its competencies have been integrated into the five remaining subjects. Particularly, it emerged in GMRC (Good Manners and Right Conduct) and Makabansa.
Outline of Grade 2 Competencies in Term 2 DLL
The Grade 2 Matatag Curriculum focuses on strengthening the foundational learning skills introduced in the previous level. Nevertheless, the competencies for the five (5) Grade 2 subjects are outlined in our prepared Matatag Curriculum Guide. Although we are unable to list all the competencies in detail due to certain limitations, you can refer to the content and performance standards below to gain insights into the expected learning outcomes for Grade 2 pupils.

ILAW Framework
Planning impactful lessons does not require overcomplicating your teaching process. The Department of Education (DepEd) uses the ILAW Framework—a practical, streamlined approach to lesson design that keeps learning focused, manageable, and effective. Whether you use different terminology in your existing lesson plans or follow DepEd templates, as long as you cover these four core components, your teaching aligns perfectly with standard pedagogical practices.
You begin with Intentions, where you focus on unpacking the learning competencies. Before stepping into the classroom, you verify whether the goals are clear and manageable within your time period while considering your students’ prior knowledge, skills, and context. Next, you build the Learning Experience by choosing instructional patterns—such as Pre-During-Post, 6Es, or 5As—that help learners reach those target intentions. You keep these experiences simple and purpose-driven, knowing that every lesson does not need technology, group work, or complex games to work.
To ensure your students grasp the concepts, you incorporate Assessing Learning continuously throughout the lesson instead of waiting until the end. You track comprehension using quick quizzes, exit slips, discussions, drills, or simple teacher observations. Finally, you determine your Ways Forward through post-lesson reflection. You document short notes on what worked and what failed, using classroom evidence to decide whether you should reteach, remediate, enrich, or move ahead to the next topic.
